According to Peter’s concept, Peterhof had to become the most splendid residence in Europe, and also become a triumphal monument as a successful conclusion of Russia’s struggle to the Baltic Sea.

In 1723 the grand residence was formally inaugurated. Peter proudly showed foreign visitors the “paradise” that he had constructed on a deserted marshy coast. After his death Peterhof Palace remained the official summer Royal residence for 200 years.
