Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka, Region by Region

5 min read

Sri Lanka is a small island, but it has two monsoon seasons that hit different coasts at different times. That is good news: whenever you travel, some part of the country is usually dry and sunny. The trick is matching your route to the season.

Quick answer: when is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

  • December to April: best for the south and west coasts (Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, Colombo), the hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) and the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla). This is peak season.

  • May to September: best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) and the north (Jaffna). The south-west is rainier but greener and quieter.

  • October and November: the in-between months, with storms possible almost anywhere. Good value, but plan with flexibility.

For a first trip that covers Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and the beach, January to March is the safest choice.

Monsoon rain usually comes as heavy afternoon or evening showers, not all-day downpours. Many travellers enjoy the low season for quieter roads, greener hills and lower hotel prices.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka by region

West and south coast (Colombo, Negombo, Bentota, Galle, Mirissa) Best: December to April. Expect calm seas, sunshine and beach weather. Mirissa is also the base for whale watching in this season. May to September brings the south-west monsoon, rougher seas and some closed beach bars, but also lower prices.

Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Horton Plains) Best: January to April, when mornings are clearest for tea-country views, hiking and the scenic train ride. The hills are cool all year (Nuwara Eliya can drop to around 10°C at night), and short showers are possible in any month. The western slopes get more rain from May to September.

Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura) Best: January to September. This central dry zone is drier than the coasts for much of the year, so it works in most seasons. October to December is the wettest time. Visit the rock fortress early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.

East coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) Best: May to September, when the south-west is wet. Beaches are calm and sunny, and Arugam Bay has its surf season. Avoid November to January, when the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain.

North (Jaffna, Mannar) Best: roughly February to September. It is hot and dry for much of the year, making it a good match for an east-coast trip. The north-east monsoon brings rain from about October to January.

Good = mostly dry and sunny. Fair = mixed, with showers. Wet = monsoon or inter-monsoon rain likely. Weather varies year to year.

Peak, shoulder and low season

  • Peak (December to March, plus July and August): best weather on the main tourist route, highest hotel prices, busy sites. Book 2–3 months ahead.

  • Shoulder (April, September, early October): good weather in many regions, fewer crowds, better deals.

  • Low (May, June, November): rain on one side of the island, lowest prices. Choose your region carefully and it can be excellent value.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Thai Pongal (mid-January): Tamil harvest festival, colourful in Jaffna and Hindu temples island-wide.

  • Sinhala and Tamil New Year (13–14 April): the biggest holiday of the year. Fun to see, but transport is packed and many shops close.

  • Vesak (May full moon): lanterns, light displays and free food stalls (dansal) celebrate the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing.

  • Poson (June full moon): pilgrims fill Anuradhapura and Mihintale.

  • Kandy Esala Perahera (July or August): ten nights of processions with elephants, dancers and drummers. The dates follow the lunar calendar; in 2026 it ran from 18 to 28 August.

  • Nallur festival, Jaffna (around August): a 25-day Hindu temple festival at Nallur Kandaswamy Temple.

  • Deepavali (October or November): the Hindu festival of lights.

Tip: every full moon day (Poya) is a public holiday. Alcohol sales are banned and some sites are busier with pilgrims.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka – FAQ

What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka? February and March are the best all-round months for a classic route covering Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and the south coast. For the east coast, July and August are ideal.

Is it worth visiting Sri Lanka during the monsoon? Yes, if you choose the right region. When it rains in the south-west (May to September), the east coast and north are dry. Rain usually falls in short, heavy bursts, and prices are lower.

What is the rainiest month in Sri Lanka? October and November are often the wettest overall, as the inter-monsoon period can bring storms to most of the island.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka for beaches? December to April for the west and south coasts; May to September for the east coast.

Is Sri Lanka good in December? Yes for the west and south coasts, the Cultural Triangle and Kandy. Avoid the east coast and Jaffna, which are in their rainy season. December is peak season, so book early.

Is Sri Lanka hot all year? The coasts and lowlands stay warm all year, around 27–32°C. The hill country is much cooler, especially at night, so pack a light jacket.
