12 Best Things to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka (2026 Guide)

Ella is a small mountain village with a big reputation. It sits in a gap in the hills, with tea estates tumbling down the slopes and a view straight through Ella Gap to the plains below. Within a short walk of town are an old stone railway bridge in the jungle, a waterfall and two of Sri Lanka's best easy hikes.

The village itself is relaxed and friendly, with cafes, rooftop restaurants and cooking classes. Most travellers plan one night here and wish they had planned two. This guide covers the best things to do, which hike to choose, and the latest on the famous train.

Nine Arch Bridge
Nine Arch Bridge

1. Nine Arch Bridge

Built during the British era and finished around 1921, this curved stone-and-brick viaduct spans a jungle ravine near Demodara. It's one of the most photographed places in Sri Lanka, especially when a blue train rolls across.

It's free to visit. From Ella it's about a 30–40 minute walk through tea gardens, or a short tuk-tuk ride to the viewpoint above the bridge. Ask your hotel or driver for the day's train times, then arrive 15–20 minutes early. Never walk on the tracks when a train is due.

2026 update: trains are running again on the Nanu Oya–Ella–Badulla section, so trains do cross the bridge. The Kandy–Nanu Oya section is still closed after Cyclone Ditwah. Full details are in our Kandy to Ella Train guide.

2. Little Adam's Peak

The easiest big view in Ella. A gentle path through tea bushes, then a set of steps, leads to a grassy summit with views across the valley to Ella Rock. It takes about 45 minutes each way and is suitable for most ages. Go at sunrise for the best light and cool air.

3. Ella Rock

The more serious hike, with a bigger reward: a cliff-top view down through Ella Gap. Allow 3–4 hours return. Parts of the trail are steep and confusing, so many visitors go with a local guide. Start early, before the clouds roll in.

4. Ravana Falls

This wide, tiered waterfall drops beside the main road about 6 km below Ella. It's free and easy to see on the way in or out of town. It's fullest after rain; in the dry season it's smaller but still pretty.

5. Ravana Cave

Linked by local tradition to the Ramayana legend, this cave sits up a steep flight of steps above the road near Ella. It's a short but sweaty climb with a view over the valley.

6. Ride the train

The hill-country railway is one of the world's great train rides. From Ella you can ride down to Demodara or Badulla, crossing the Nine Arch Bridge and the Demodara spiral loop, or ride up through the tea country towards Nanu Oya. Check the latest schedule before you go.

7. Flying Ravana zipline

For something more adventurous, the Flying Ravana zipline sends you flying over the jungle and tea fields on one of the longest ziplines in South Asia. It's a hit with teenagers and adventurous couples. Check current rates and weight limits when booking.

8. Lipton's Seat (half-day trip)

About 1.5 hours away near Haputale, this hilltop was a favourite of tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton. Get there early for a sea of tea estates and misty valleys, then visit the Dambatenne tea factory below.

9. Tea estate and factory visit

The Halpe and Uva estates around Ella produce the region's famous bright, brisk Uva tea. A factory tour and tasting is a relaxed afternoon activity, especially if you missed one in Nuwara Eliya.

10. Sri Lankan cooking class

Several family-run kitchens in Ella teach you to cook a full rice and curry spread, from coconut sambol to dhal. You eat everything you make. It's one of the most-loved experiences in town, and vegetarian and halal options can be arranged.

11. Demodara loop and the Uva valley

Near Demodara station, the railway spirals around a hill and passes under itself, a clever piece of colonial engineering. Combine it with the Nine Arch Bridge for a scenic half-day by tuk-tuk.

12. Cafes and sunset in Ella town

End the day at one of Ella's rooftop cafes or restaurants with a view of the hills. The main street is compact, safe and lively in the evenings.

  • From Kandy: about 4.5–5 hours by road (the Kandy–Nanu Oya train section is suspended in 2026)

  • By train: trains run from Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) to Ella and on to Badulla

  • To Yala: about 2.5–3 hours, the classic next step for a safari

  • To the south coast (Mirissa, Galle): about 4–5 hours

Tips for visiting Ella

  • Start early. Clouds and crowds build by mid-morning, at the viewpoints and on the hikes.

  • Wear proper shoes. Trails can be muddy and slippery after rain.

  • Bring a layer. Ella is warmer than Nuwara Eliya, but mornings and evenings are cool.

  • Stay safe at the bridge. Step well off the tracks when a train approaches, and don't sit on the bridge edges.

  • Book ahead in peak season. December to April and July to August are busy, and the best view hotels sell out.

Ella FAQ

Is the Ella train running in 2026?

Yes, between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla since July 2026. The Kandy–Nanu Oya section is still closed for repairs, so travellers from Kandy drive to Nanu Oya first.

How do I see a train on the Nine Arch Bridge?

Ask your hotel for the day's train times and arrive 15–20 minutes early. Trains are often late, so be patient.

Is Nine Arch Bridge free?

Yes. There is no entry fee, though cafes at the viewpoints may expect you to buy a drink.

Which is easier, Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock? Little Adam's Peak is much easier: about 1.5 hours return on a clear path. Ella Rock takes 3–4 hours, and a guide is recommended.

Is Ella good for families?

Yes. Little Adam's Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Falls are all easy with children. Skip Ella Rock with young kids.

What comes after Ella? Most itineraries continue to Yala for a safari, then to the south coast beaches.
