12 Best Things to Do in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's Tea Country

At about 1,900 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya feels like a different country from the steamy coast. Mist drifts over tea-covered hills, mornings are crisp, and red-brick colonial buildings line a little lake. The British built it as a cool-climate retreat in the 1800s, which is why it is still called "Little England".
Today it is the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country and a favourite stop between Kandy and Ella. Families love the cool air and flower gardens. Couples come for the misty views and cosy hotels. This guide covers the best things to do, the weather, what to pack and how long to stay.
Quick answer: Visit a working tea factory, ride a boat on Gregory Lake, see Ramboda Falls on the drive up, and hike to World's End in Horton Plains if you can start early. Spend at least one night; two nights gives you time for Horton Plains.
1. Tour a working tea factory
This is the number-one reason to come. On a factory tour you follow the leaf from withering and rolling to drying and sorting, then finish with a cup of fresh tea overlooking the estate. Pedro Tea Estate near town and the big factories on the Kandy road, such as Mackwoods and Damro, are popular stops. Tours are short and cheap, and many are free with tasting. Go in the morning, when the factories are busiest.
2. Walk among the tea bushes
Seeing tea pickers at work on the steep slopes is unforgettable. Several estates let visitors walk along the tea rows for photos. Please ask before photographing the pickers, and a small tip is appreciated.
3. Gregory Lake
This lake on the edge of town is Nuwara Eliya's playground. Take a swan pedal boat or a motorboat, ride a pony along the shore, or simply walk the lakeside path. There is a small entry fee for foreigners. Late afternoon, when the light softens, is the best time.
4. Horton Plains and World's End
About 1–1.5 hours' drive from town, Horton Plains National Park is a high grassland plateau of cloud forest and streams. The 9.5 km loop trail leads to World's End, a sheer cliff that drops about 870 metres. It passes Mini World's End and the pretty Baker's Falls on the way. The walk takes about 3 hours.
Start very early. Leave town around 5:00–5:30 am, because mist usually covers the view by mid-morning. Entry is roughly US$35–40 per foreign adult, including service charge and tax, plus a vehicle fee. It's paid in cash in rupees. Plastic is restricted inside the park.
5. Ramboda Falls
One of Sri Lanka's tallest waterfalls tumbles down beside the Kandy–Nuwara Eliya road, about 30 minutes before town. Stop for photos and a cup of tea at the viewpoint restaurants overlooking it. It's an easy, free highlight of the drive up.

6. Victoria Park
A neat Victorian-era park in the town centre, full of flower beds, old trees and birdlife. It is at its most colourful from March to May and from August to September. It's an easy, relaxing walk, especially with children.
7. Hakgala Botanical Garden
About 10 km from town, these cool-climate gardens are known for roses, ferns, orchids and misty mountain views. They are smaller and quieter than Peradeniya in Kandy. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
8. Seetha Amman Temple
A colourful Hindu temple near Hakgala, linked by tradition to the Ramayana story of Sita. It's a popular stop for Indian and Hindu travellers, and an interesting one for anyone curious about the legend.
9. Colonial Nuwara Eliya
Walk past the pink-brick post office (one of the oldest in the country), the Tudor-style Grand Hotel and the historic Hill Club. Stop for high tea at one of the old hotels. It is the most "Little England" experience in town.
10. Lover's Leap Waterfall
A short walk through tea plantations leads to this slender waterfall just outside town. Combine it with the Pidurutalagala viewpoints for a half-morning outing.
11. Moon Plains (Mini World's End)
A jeep ride up the hills outside town takes you to Moon Plains, a grassy plateau with sweeping views on a clear day. It's a good alternative if you can't fit in Horton Plains.
12. Strawberries, vegetables and the market
Nuwara Eliya grows much of Sri Lanka's vegetables and strawberries. Stop at a strawberry farm for fresh fruit and desserts, and browse the town market for warm jackets, if you forgot yours.
Nuwara Eliya weather and what to pack
Nuwara Eliya is cool all year. Days are usually around 18–22 °C, and nights can drop to 10 °C or lower, especially from December to February, when frost is possible on clear nights. Mist and drizzle can roll in at any time.
Pack:
A warm jacket or fleece and a long-sleeved layer
Long trousers and closed shoes (essential for Horton Plains)
A light raincoat or umbrella
Warm socks for evenings; many older hotels have no heating
Sunscreen; the high-altitude sun is strong even when it feels cool
Best time to visit Nuwara Eliya
The driest, clearest months are January to April, which are also the best for Horton Plains views. April is peak season, when Sri Lankans celebrate the New Year here with horse races, flower shows and motor events. It's festive, but hotels are expensive and booked out, so plan well ahead. May to September brings more mist and drizzle from the southwest monsoon, but the hills are lush and green. See our Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka guide for the whole island.
