Distance / Travel Time: Approx. 50 km round trip / 1.5 hrs (plus 3-hr safari)
Start early to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Sri Lanka’s best-known landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. King Kashyapa built this 5th-century CE citadel atop a 200-meter rock. The name means “Lion Rock”, and today only the giant stone lion paws remain at the gateway. On the way up, you pass landscaped water gardens, the famous Sigiriya frescoes of celestial maidens, and the polished Mirror Wall. The summit has palace ruins and views across the jungle. After lunch, take an afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, between Habarana and Polonnaruwa. Herds of wild Asian elephants gather here around the ancient Minneriya Tank, and you may also see sambar deer, toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, crocodiles, and many birds. Leopards live in the park but are rarely seen. Minneriya is one of Asia's best places to see wild elephants, and it’s a highlight of any Sri Lanka itinerary.
