Day 2: Galle Fort Tour – Japanese Peace Pagoda – Turtle Hatchery – Yala National Park

Distance / Travel Time: Approx. 170 km / 3–3.5 hrs to Yala

Start with a guided walking tour of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Portuguese began it, and the Dutch greatly extended it in the 17th century. Inside its 36 hectares of ramparts, you’ll pass the iconic lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, old warehouses, boutique shops, and art galleries, with views over Unawatuna Bay. Next, take a short drive and a gentle hike up Rumassala Hill to the white Japanese Peace Pagoda, where there are sweeping views across the jungle and the sea. On the way east, stop at a non-profit sea turtle hatchery and rescue center that protects nesting turtles, rescues injured ones, and releases hatchlings into the ocean. Tour the tanks and nesting areas, and if the timing is right, help release baby turtles. In the afternoon, continue to Yala National Park and settle into your rustic safari lodge.

You may also see wild elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boar, and colorful peacocks among more than 200 bird species. After breakfast, drive west to Tangalle, a charming fishing port with some of the south coast's most unspoiled beaches. Then visit Mulkirigala Rock Temple, an ancient monastery with rock-cut cave shrines dating back to the 3rd century BCE. Long stairways lead past reclining Buddhas and murals to a sacred Bo tree at the summit. In the afternoon, head to the small fishing village of Kudawella to see the Hummanaya Blowhole, one of the world's largest, where seawater shoots up to 25 meters into the air.
