Day 1: Arrival in Colombo – Tangalle | Beach Day at Seenimodara

Distance / Travel Time: Approx. 230 km / 4–4.5 hrs via the Southern Expressway

Ayubowan! Welcome to Sri Lanka. Your D Asia chauffeur-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport, and you drive down the Southern Expressway to Tangalle. This charming fishing port is known for Dutch colonial-era buildings and some of the most unspoiled beaches on the south coast. After checking in, spend the rest of the day at Seenimodara Beach, a reef-sheltered bay with calm, clear water that’s ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Five of the world’s seven marine turtle species nest along this stretch of coast. If you’d like, wait on the sand after dark to watch for turtles coming ashore. Sightings are never guaranteed, but they’re unforgettable when they happen.

  • Ussangoda: a mysterious, windswept red-earth plateau above the sea
  • Hummanaya Blowhole: one of the largest blowholes in the world
  • Wewurukannala Vihara: home to a giant 50-metre seated Buddha
  • Mulkirigala Rock Temple: an ancient cave temple complex on a towering rock

After dinner, head to Rekawa Beach, one of Sri Lanka’s most important turtle nesting sites. Join a local conservation project for night-time turtle watching, and if you’re lucky you’ll see green and olive ridley turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.
