Ayubowan! Welcome to Sri Lanka. Your D Asia chauffeur-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport, then drives you south to the open grasslands of Udawalawe National Park. It’s one of the best places in Asia to see wild Asian elephants, and herds of 50 or more often gather around the Udawalawe reservoir. In the late afternoon, set out on a jeep safari to spot elephants bathing at the waterholes, along with water buffalo, sambar deer, spotted deer, monitor lizards, crocodiles, and toque macaques. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with peacocks, eagles and colorful bee-eaters. Afterward, return to your hotel for dinner and a well-earned rest.

It’s a lovely moment for all ages, and an ethical alternative to elephant rides. After lunch, drive east to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve. On an afternoon jeep safari through scrub jungle, lagoons and rocky outcrops, you’ll look for the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, along with elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles and more than 200 bird species.

Return to the hotel for a late breakfast, then head west along the southern coastline to Mirissa, a crescent-shaped beach lined with coconut palms. Spend the afternoon swimming, climbing Coconut Tree Hill for views, or relaxing in a hammock. In the evening, have dinner at a beachfront restaurant and watch the sun sink into the Indian Ocean.

Back on shore, continue to Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Walk the ramparts of the 17th-century Dutch Fort, past the old lighthouse, colonial churches, boutique cafés and galleries, and enjoy the views toward Unawatuna Bay. In the afternoon, drive up the coast to Bentota, a resort town where the river meets the sea. Relax on the golden beach or try watersports such as scuba diving, windsurfing, jet-skiing, or deep-sea fishing. End the day with a fresh seafood dinner by the ocean.
