4D3N THIMPHU – PUNAKHA & PARO
THIMPHU (1N) – PUNAKHA (1N) – PARO (2N)
CODE: BHU-04-01
DAY 1: ARRIVAL PARO – THIMPHU SIGHTSEEING (50 Kms, 1.5-2 Hrs) (D)
Meet and greet on arrival at Paro International Airport and transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan's capital city nestled in a valley in the western interior. On arrival, dive straight into a sightseeing tour of the capital: visit the massive Tashichho Dzong, a fortified monastery and government palace with gold-leaf roofs housing the King's throne room, and the Memorial Chorten, a whitewashed shrine built in memory of Bhutan's third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, where locals still circle in prayer daily. Continue to Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) for sweeping valley views, Coronation Park, and the Takin Zoo, home to Bhutan's bizarre national animal — part goat, part cow. Check into your hotel. Overnight stay at Thimphu.
DAY 2: THIMPHU – PUNAKHA (75 Kms, 3 Hrs) (B, D)
After breakfast, depart Thimphu and make your first stop at Semtokha Dzong, Bhutan's oldest fortress, built in 1629. Continue climbing toward Dochula Pass (3,100m) — on a clear day, this single viewpoint reveals over a dozen snow-capped Himalayan peaks, ringed by 108 memorial chortens built for fallen soldiers. Descend into the warmer Punakha valley, stopping at the cheeky Chhimi Lhakhang — the "Fertility Temple," blessed by the eccentric 15th-century saint known as the "Divine Madman." Arrive at Punakha Dzong, arguably Bhutan's most beautiful fortress, cradled between two rivers and once the seat of government where kings were crowned. Cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, the longest in the kingdom, strung with fluttering prayer flags.
Dinner and overnight stay at Punakha.
DAY 3: PUNAKHA – PARO SIGHTSEEING (125 Kms, 4-5 Hrs) (B, D)
After breakfast, check out and drive back to Paro. On arrival, visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), a circular watchtower-turned-museum holding centuries of art, and Rinpung Dzong, built in 1646 and still functioning as both a monastery and government seat today. Cross the Nya Mey Zam Bridge — "the bridge with no fish" — and if time permits, visit Kichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, dating back to the 7th century. Dinner and overnight stay at Paro.
DAY 4: PARO – DEPARTURE (B)
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight — taking with you the memories of the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
